The writing in the wind - INQUIRER.net, Philippine News for Filipinos

"And finally, our appeal to the world for help is fully justified. The bedraggled throng that huddles in the evacuation centers that have sprouted all over the country we used to see only in countries pounded by war, famine and disease. What used to happen only to “other people” has happened to us. Your heart goes out to those who have to build their lives all over again. I know only the loss of life is truly a cause for despair, possessions can always be replaced, but tell that to those who have lost everything to Ondoy and Pepeng.

Just as well, the murder and mayhem, the looting and lying, the vileness and abuse that have become the way of life of this country we used to see only in African countries ruled by rulers whose names we could not pronounce. What used to happen only to other countries has happened to us. Injustice is rife, indecency par for the course. The country is in a state of calamity for more reasons than have to do with rain and flood. I know only the loss of life is truly a cause for despair, but tell that to those who lost their freedom, their sanity and their hope for a better life for their children under Marcos and Arroyo. Your heart goes out to the next president of this country. His relief work is cut out for him, and he may not turn to the world for help.

Nature is showing us a metaphor for our lives. The writing isn’t on the wall, it’s in the wind."
